Great Books for Your Classroom Library In Arctic Waters by Laura Crawford, illustrated by Ben Hodson Sylvan Dell Publishing ISBN: 97809768823-4-3 The Arctic may be the farthest thing from your mind this summer, but this introductory look at Arctic animals would be a nice addition to a home or classroom library. Crawford's simple, repetitive rhyming text is kid-friendly and Hodson's illustrations show these animals in rich tones with fairly realistic features (minus the smiling faces). The animals are shown sort of in the food chain, but no one gets eaten here. In the back of the book, as is present in all Sylvan Dell titles, are fact sheets on each animal in a section called "For Creative Minds," that includes copyable cut-out images for kids to build their own mix-and-match creatures. A very "cool" intro to Arctic animals! Recommended for K - 2 classrooms. The Rainforest Grew All Around by Susan K. Mitchell, illustrated by Connie McLennan Sylvan Dell Publishing ISBN: 978-09768823-6-7 Set to the tune of a familiar song, this lilting text describes the life around a kapok tree growing in the Amazonian rainforest, including a jaguar, sloth, ants, butterflies, a snake, curling flowering vines, bromeliads, and more, and in a side panel on each page is a bit of fact about each, making this a superbly educational and entertaining book for young readers. The illustrations are just lovely - richly drawn with detail and color, and there's just so much going on in each picture! Readers will surely find something new every time they read it. And as a teacher bonus, the For Creative Minds section here includes a recipe for rainforest cookies! Highly recommended for classrooms K - 2. |
