Word Lab: Building Word Knowledge through Literature From the creator, Carla Kessler: "I wrote this program because of my own frustrations in helping "word readers" get past that block. I finished my Masters thesis 4 years ago (on the research of vocabulary acquisition) and have pursued creating a workable curriculum ever since. My husband is a computer programmer, so that made it possible to translate my ideas into reality. It has grown substantially and this year my school district let me have a 1/2 time leave to gather validating research on the effectiveness of the program and to increase the number of book curriculums available, as all the activities are based on vocabulary from literature. In other words, kids read a book while they apply the comprehension/vocabulary activities to chosen vocabulary within the book they are reading."
